Hi there, fiddle friend!
As I already have a general newsletter for myself and another for my duo with Kieran Kane, perhaps maintaining ANOTHER email list that’s fiddle-specific is overkill. But, hey: you’re reading this, aren’t you?
I originally started the “fiddlegeek” email list as a way to alert folks when I had an online workshop coming up. But then I realized it might be fun to create a space that’s really old-time-fiddle focused. As I’ve gotten to know the Substack platform a little better, it occurred to me that this may be a good space for having conversations about fiddling and old-time music. So here we go!
Site Updates
If you’ve popped in to visit my website recently, you’ll notice it has been overhauled. Mostly that’s about design and organization, but I have also added some hoops to jump through to access my fiddle tune videos. After what feels like a zillion years of allowing free access to all the tunes I posted, I was finally convinced that it was time to request a small fee from users. I will always keep a subset of the collection free, but the full library of tunes is now $5/month.
I figure if a fiddler is popping in to find one specific tune, $5 isn’t much to ask. You can sign up, check out the tune you want, and cancel your subscription immediately. And if it’s a resource you use regularly (or if you simply want to support the endeavor), $5 a month is a deal!
I’m also fielding requests for tunes to add to the collection. I’ve already added one of the requests I got recently (“Black-Eyed Susie” in D), and will be adding more soon.
Note that nothing has changed as far as access to my online workshops! You can still buy tickets to archived workshops over at my Ko-fi page. (That’s also where you can buy fiddlegeek stickers and old-time a.i. silliness.)
Tour Dates
Next week the KKRG duo will be hitting the road to Georgia and North Carolina! If you’re near one of these spots, I hope to see you:
Mar. 28: Savannah, GA // Savannah Music Festival
Mar. 29: Asheville, NC // Wortham Center
Mar. 30: Greensboro, NC // Carolina Theatre
Also: in late April I’ll be hopping over to Ireland to accompany Joachim Cooder for his jam-packed spring tour.
And so…
Between tour dates and other events, I haven’t found a good Sunday afternoon for a fiddle workshop this spring. But you can always hit me up for a one-on-one fiddle coaching session, post questions or other input in the comments section here on Substack, and check out the workshop archive.
Thanks for reading & geeking out with me!
Keep in touch —

PS: If you opted in for receiving correspondence from me via my tune video signup, I’ve added you to this email list. You don’t have to be a subscriber to view these notes, so if you don’t want another email piling up in your inbox, please feel free to unsubscribe!
